Teaching Piano to Students with Dyslexia
In December of 2010 Kristine Konrad published Teaching Piano to Students with Dyslexia, based on two years of both primary and secondary research. The research revealed that when intervention based on a multi-sensory approach is used, students with dyslexia can indeed learn to play the piano by reading music. Kristine found that this basket of intervention techniques helps readers of all abilities to break the code of the language of music. To read Teaching Piano to Students with Dyslexia, visit Google Books or through your local library visit either Ebsco Host or World Cat data bases.
Teaching Piano and the Invaluable Life Skill of Self Discipline
In 2014, Kristine published the article, “Teaching Piano and the Invaluable Life Skill of Self Discipline.” In the article, Kristine describes the successful multi-tiered practice incentive program used in her studio. Practicing is so much more than telling students to go home and practice, then hoping they’ve gleaned enough inspiration from their lesson and have enough self-motivation to practice on their own. In this digital age, where instant gratification is everyone’s expectation, working on something until you’ve “mastered” it has become a lost art. In her studio, Kristine has discovered that she needs to teach students not only how to play the piano, but also the life skill of self-discipline. Developing this skill has allowed her students to achieve success not only at the piano, but also in other aspects of their lives. This article can be found in the May/June 2014 issue of Clavier Companion at your local library.
